What are they for?
Is it just another way to count active members? If so, how does it prevent post slutting, or generating many useless posts to increase the count?

Good questions-- we recently added points but they're still in beta so we haven't promoted them much. Will post more about them soon and meanwhile check out the members page, under (E) Experience, to see how they might evolve.
