What car alarm would you suggest?
So, no room in the garage, and I'm tired of people messing with my Jeep, breaking into the console, stealing sunglasses, cell phone chargers etc. I'd rather not carry a "man bag", but I have too much stuff(garage door opener, cell phone charger, stereo faceplate, sunglasses, iPod, iPod cable, etc.) to carry in/out every night. So, I'm thinking it's time for an alarm with a proximity sensor. Any suggestions? I've had Clifford before and was happy with it for the most part. Oh, this will be in a 2002 Wrangler, so I have no need for keyless entry, or glass break, or remote start. I figured other Jeep owners would know better than the guy at the stereo shop. Also, would it be more practical to go with, say, a Tuffy steel console? Thanks in advance, Chris

I've got the following kit installed (click on Wrangler there) for my TJ and they've worked well:
- Valet® Alarm
Viper Alarm- vibration, remote start, valet mode, etc - Tuffy Boxes - center, overhead, and rear lockboxes for TJ
These were very good for their day, but then again were was installed about 5 years ago so might not be relevant now with all the recent advances... if buying today, I'd personally really like an alarm that communicated longer distance, even out-of-site, via the keyfob, like if there was one that could either txt msg my Jeep alarm status if something changed, or even allow long distance or out-of-site arm/disarm. That's probably something more along the lines of GM's OnStar, which I think relies on cellular technology, but perhaps other members know if something like it is available for aftermarket (depending on your budget).
Now that my anger has subsided more, (theft was last night!) I'm leaning more toward the Tuffy Console, since they just popped the locked lid on the factory console. And the last thing I need is the cat setting off the alarm every night. Oh, since you mentioned it, I think GM could make a fortune if they would make OnStar available to the aftermarket. I'd have it in my Wrangler as well as my wife's Commander!
Darn, sorry to hear that; theft really xxxx-- I had my spare MTR tire and aluminum rim take off my roofrack shortly after moving, and my TJ was parked directly in front of the local church no less!
Yeah no matter what alarm, I'd still go with Tuffy or whatever the best equivalent is these days... I'm in Jersey City and its great peace of mind knowing that even if someone breaks in they couldn't really get to my GPS, XM, CB, Bearcat, etc that I keep in the lock boxes. Same for when I take the doors/top off the TJ, it's great knowing spendy gear is locked up tight.
BTW I got my own alarm wrong-- the make is actually called Valet®, and th emodel is 563T... I'll update it my earlier comment above as well.
Ditto on OnStar, I'd be a buyer! Hhmmm, actually with GM's recent stock lows and losses, that might be a good idea for them as well... if they're not selling cars w/ OnStar, they might as well look at selling OnStar as-a-service.
BTW if you do go w/ an alarm at some point, do check out remote start options... might sound spendy/soft, but really nice for cold winters if your rig is also a daily-driver.
deffenitly go with the tuffy consoles. that sucks about you constintly getting broken in to. mabye you need to watch your jeep one night and catch em red handed and scare the crap out of em.
I don't need no instructions to know how to ROCK!!!!!!!!
